USA fined Amazon for trade with the Crimea


The company has violated the sanctions.

American online retailer Amazon will pay 134,5 thousand dollars (3.62 million UAH) penalty for violation of U.S. sanctions, including in respect of the annexed Crimea, reports the with reference to Browser.

It is noted that 2011-2018 years Amazon provided goods and services to people in the regions subject to U.S. sanctions. We are talking about the Crimea, Iran and Syria. Amazon also catered to customers who personally appeared in the sanctions lists or has worked at the diplomatic missions of the countries from such lists.

Cause of violations was incorrect operation of the automated system to verify whether a particular client Amazon under sanctions. Only online retailer spent hundreds of transactions violating sanctions programs, for a total amount of about 269 thousand dollars (7.2 million UAH).

Amazon faced fines of more than a million dollars, but its amount was reduced: OFAC considered the violations are not substantial and took into account the fact that the company reported to them voluntarily.
