The Macedonian President called the cause of the refusal to rename the country

Macedonian President Ivanov Here on Tuesday did not sign an agreement with Greece to change the name of the country.

“I have no authority to sign the agreement. One of the points of my election program in 2014 was to avoid amending the Constitution and under it the name of the country”, – said the head of state.

The dispute about the name Macedonia continued between the two countries for 27 years. He prevented the admission of Macedonia in NATO and the European Union. Greece demanded to change the name of the neighboring Republic, that it is not confused with the homonymous Greek region.

On 17 June of the current year a preliminary agreement on the renaming of Macedonia was signed by the foreign Ministers of the two countries. On June 20 the document was ratified by the Parliament of Macedonia.

As reported, in the case of a presidential veto of the Treaty should be re-examined by Parliament and approved by an absolute majority (61 of 120). The final decision on the fate of the Treaty should adopt the Macedonian citizens on a referendum in September or October.

Note that the initiative on renaming the country caused the Macedonians a negative reaction. In some cities there were mass protests.
