The processor Apple A12, which will debut in the iPhone models 2018, will be the first time in commercial gadgets built using a 7-nm process technology and will, according to the manual, the most important product TSMC in 2018. Since the third quarter, TSMC will start production of 7-nanometer chips using photolithography in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV).
Also TSMC has already received orders for 7-nanometer chips from 20 companies, including AMD, Nvidia and Qualcomm. Most of them will be performed only in the first half of 2019, i.e. six months later than for Apple.
Technology 7-nm refers to the density of transistors on a chip. Using a smaller process technology allows the processor to be smaller, faster and more efficiently, and over time can lead to cost savings. Them smartphones will be able to operate on battery power longer and less warm.
Current leading processors in smartphones like Apple A11 and Bionic Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, are now made with a 10-nm process.It is also noted that the company TSMC plans to start production of chips using 5-nm manufacturing process in the first half of next year; mass production of such processors could begin in the second half of 2019.
